START - Student Training in the ARTS

StarStruck Theatre is thrilled to announce the return of START Program after celebrating our landmark 15th Season! START - Student Training in the ARTS - is a non-profit, tuition based teaching program for individuals interested in gaining and developing their skills in the performing arts. Students are taught by industry professionals in the areas of acting, singing, dance, movement, improve, technical theatre and more!

Each class has a 10 student minimum for enrollment and will cap at 20 students. Once you have sent enrollment information, you will receive a confirmation of your child’s enrollment. Medical Release Form and Payment in full are due at time of registration.

Most classes will culminate in a sharing the final day of the course to present the work that has been created in the classes. This sharing is open to family and friends.

START Fall 2010 Classes

START Special Series Improv Comedy Workshop

In conjunction with the Diaspora Initiative, the first START (Student Training in the Arts) Special Series Workshop is coming up next week! It's an Improv Comedy Workshop focusing on the rules of improv and staying "open" onstage through games, exercises and having a blast onstage with your friends! The workshop culminates with a performance by the participants, sharing their new skills with friends, family and anyone else who wants to attend. No previous experience necessary, just send email to jeffreyscottoliveira@gmail.com saying you would like to attend, and show up with an open mind, a positive attitude and your enrollment fee!

  • Who: Anyone over 11 years of ages. Parents are welcome and encouraged!

  • 5:00 - 8:00 PM Workshop with Mark and Dylan
  • 8:00 - 9:00 PM Open performance - free, come watch!

Instructor's Bios:

Mark Stetson

Graduate from Columbia College Chicago in 2006 with a BA in acting.  Mark developed the theater/improv program at Camp Judaea in Hendersonville, North Carolina, teaching theater and improv to 7-14 year olds for 3 years. He has studied Improv with Second City Chicago alumni in Chicago and at the Upright Citizen's Brigade in New York City with Bobby Moynahan ("SNL") and Charlie Todd ("Improv Everywhere"). Mark has also studied classic clown with Eric Davis ("Cirque du Soleil") and Stanley Allan Sherman ("International Theater School Jacque Lecoq").  Mark has done Stand Up at "Caroline's Comedy Club," "Comix Comedy Club," "The Laugh Factory," "New York Comedy Club," "The Comic Strip New York," and "Broadway Comedy Club" with Louis CK and Jim Gaffigan.  He has been producing/performing his own Improv, Stand Up, and Sketch comedy shows at Comix Comedy Club starring comics from SNL and Last Comic Standing. He is a founding member of the Improv group "Maybe Sherman" and sketch groups "So Busted" and "The Sean Miller Explosion."

Dylan O'Harra

Dylan is a  founding member of The Gallimaufry, an improv troupe from Portland, OR. He studied under Scott Parker, an original student of Keith Johnstone. He is a 2006 graduate of The Pacific Conservatory of Performing Arts in Santa Maria, CA. He was also director of the Campfire Sketch Night at Camp Gorsuch in Chugiak, Alaska from 2001-2004. 


Survey of Technical Theatre

Instructor: Anthony Wickizer

Ages 13-18: Saturdays 1:00-2:00PM September 25th-November 13th 2010

Fee:$160

Come explore the life of a backstage technician! Want to learn how to hang and focus a light, build a platform, put a mic on an actor, or simply move a set across the stage? In this course we will cover the basics of lighting, sound, set, props and management as we learn what it takes to get a show off the ground.


Group Voice Lessons

Instructor: Jeffrey Oliveira

Ages 11-14: Tuesdays 4:30-5:30PM September 28th-November 16th 2010

Fee: $160

Interested in improving your vocal skills? Whether it's for an audition or just for fun, this is the perfect class for you! Group voice lessons are designed to focus on basic techniques and musicality skills, including: breathing, posture, tone, theory and song selection in a fun and positive learning environment.


Creative Drama for the Stage

Instructor: Evan Boomer

Ages 7-9: Wednesdays 4:00-4:55PM September 29th- November 17th 2010

Ages 10-12: Wednesdays 5:00-5:55PM September 29th- November 17th 2010

Fee: $160

Is your child ready for a life on the stage? This course allows your young artist to explore the tools that every actor needs to be comfortable on the stage. The student will explore their imaginations, and learn how to communicate ideas. Your artist will discover how to use their bodies and voice as a tool and connect this to developing a character. Creative Drama is a wonderful introduction to the theatre and a way to build confidence through a fun theatrical journey.


Musical Theatre Workshop

Ages 7-9: Mondays 3:30-4:55PM September 27th- November 15th 2010

Ages 10-12: Mondays 5:00-6:25PM September 27th-November 15th 2010

Fee: $240

StarStruck Theatre’s Musical Theatre Workshop is designed to give students an introduction to the world of musical theatre through song and dance. This class is perfect for the beginning to intermediate student or the student who loves musical theatre, but does not have time to commit to a main stage production. Students will have the experience of being a part of an ensemble, gain a sense of accomplishment, and most of all have fun with musical theatre!


StarStruck Showstoppers!

Instructor: Jeffrey Oliveira

Ages 12-21: Mondays 7:00-10:00PM September 27th-November 15th 2010*

In addition, performances through December 22nd will be required as they are scheduled

Become a part of our first official non-production based performance group! This ensemble will be a mix of the hit TV show Glee and the community staple “Thor Throats” with a unique StarStruck twist and consist of 12-24 young performers experienced in dance, singing and acting. Members will put together a show of varied Musical Theatre repertoire that will perform at various community and competitive venues. Admission to this class is by AUDITION ONLY. Auditions will be concurrent with the mainstage production (Annie) auditions on September 18-20th. You do not need to audition for Annie to be considered for Showstoppers, but you are welcome and encouraged to! Please refer to the audition page for more details.

*Please note: this is only an approximation of rehearsal lengths; depending on the difficulty of repertoire rehearsals may be shorter than 3 hours and not go until November.

**Fee will vary depending on costume needs, and is not required to audition. Fees will be due by the second rehearsal (Oct. )
